QUINCY, Ill. - QU looked to right the ship after an unsuccessful trip to Ohio State last week playing host to the No. 19 Flyers of Lewis University.
Raje Alleyne collected a match-leading 19 kills in a losing effort as the Hawks kept it close but could never capitalize for a (27-29, 22-25, 21-25) defeat.
Set One
Alleyne was firing on all cylinders to open the contest collecting a pair of kills and an ace to account for three of four QU points in an early 4-1 advantage that soon grew a points further thanks to two kills from
Zackary Zdrojeski as well as one termination apiece for
Logan Gieseke and
Keegan Carey to make it 8-4
LU equalized at 9-9 before kills from Alleyne and Carey along with a service ace for
Logan Brouwer kept the Hawks at the forefront. Later in the set, the Flyers knotted the score once more at 15-15 then traded points with QU until utilizing a four-point run down 18-17 to lead it 21-18.
Quincy delivered five of the next seven to deadlock the tally at 23-23. The Hawks forced set point at 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26 but ultimately surrendered three straight to close out a disheartening 29-27 loss in the first set.
Set Two
Lewis opened the early advantage taking eight of the first 13 points to lead by three. Shortly after at 11-7 in favor of the visitors QU took four of six points on kills from Zdrojeski, Carey and
Roman Deryckere who also added an ace to chop the deficit to 13-11.
The Flyers took six of nine points from there to lead 19-14 followed up by a 4-1 run from the Hawks to draw within two at 20-18 capped by another ace from Brouwer. Lewis took four of the next six to make it 24-20, surrendering a pair of scores before one of its swings found the hard for a 25-22 win.
Set Three
LU led for over half the set jumping out to an early 9-4 advantage that kept them in the drivers seat but the Hawks stuck with it and took 11 of the next 17 points to pull ahead for the first time in the set at 15-14.
QU led as late as 18-17 and trailed by only a point at 20-19 and 21-20, but a three-point run from Lewis all but decided it as the set and match winner came two points later with a 25-21 final score.

The Hawks host the Cardinals of Ball State University for their next match on Friday (Feb. 23). First serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
