Box Score 2 QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks defeated a pair of foes this weekend, one on the road and one at home for not only a sweep, but the programs first win over Maryville in over a decade spanning back to the 2013 season. QU won by the minimum in both matches, taking down the Spartans of Missouri Baptist in St. Louis 4-3 on Friday (Feb. 16) and the Saints of Maryville by the same score at home on Sunday (Feb. 18).
Missouri Baptist Match
Quincy dropped two out of three doubles matches with the lone bright spot being a flawless 6-0 victory for the pairing of
Anna Matino and
Steffi Lao over Ariana and Mia of MBU.
Mar Sarda Marti and
Ana Alvarez were outdone by the team of Nina and Jocelyn 6-4 as well as a dropped match from
Mahi Panchal and
Blanca Salas Cruz 3-6 to Camila and Luana to give the Spartans the doubles point.
MBU claimed the first and third singles matches to collect its second and third points of the match. Camila defeated Panchal (6-2, 6-4) and Sarda Marti was forced to retire in the first set of her match to Jocelyn pulling the Spartans within a point of a team victory.
The Hawks won four singles matches to secure the team victory with two of them coming in straight sets. Alvarez soundly defeated her opponent Mariana (6-1, 6-1) as well as Matino delivering a 6-0 first set and 6-2 second set for a winner in her match against Mia.
Both Lao and Salas Cruz completed come-back victories after dropping the first set in their respective matches. Salas Cruz fell 4-6 to Nina of MBU in set one before taking set two and three both by 6-3 scores. Lao was outdone by Luana in their first set 3-6 before taking the last two by 6-2 and 6-1 scores to help give the Hawks four points and the win,.
Maryville Match
All three doubles pairings for the Hawks were unable to come away with a win against MU. Gonlusen and Sporing defeated Salas Cruz and Panchal 6-3, Orlove and Saka beat Lao and Matino 6-4 along with a 7-6 victory for Lisson and Suarez over Alvarez and Sarda Marti for the doubles point.
Panchal lost her match to Gonlusen (5-7, 1-6) and Alvarez fell to Lisson (1-6, 1-6) for points two and three for the Saints.
The Hawks got wins in matches 2-5 with three of them going the distance before turning in QU's favor. Lao claimed the only two-set win, taking down Saka 6-3 and 7-6, earning the 7-4 victory in the second set tiebreak.
Sarda Marti started off strong in her match taking the first set 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-7 (5-7) in tiebreaks to force a match tie-break, which she won 10-7. Salas Cruz lost her first set 2-6 before taking the second 6-4 and the tie-break by a narrow 10-8 score knotted the match at 3-3.
After dropping the first set of her match to Suarez 2-6, Matino came back to defeat Suarez by the same score in the second set and then 10-6 in the match tie-breaks to give QU its first win over Maryville since the 2013 season.
Next up for the Hawks is a Saturday (Feb. 24) showdown with the Bearcats of McKendree University in Lebanon, IL. First serve is slated for 5:00 PM.
