Box Score DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Hawks faced off with the Nighthawks of North Georgia once more on Sunday (Feb. 18) in the finale of their opening weekend series. UNG utilized a five-run sixth and four-run seventh to fuel a 15-4 victory and sweep of the series.
North Georgia got on the board in the bottom half of the first on a wild pitch from the Hawks starter,
Kobe Essien, to score a runner that reached base via a walk earlier in the inning before Essien got out of the jam with a strikeout. NGU added another in the third on an infield single with two men on, but Essien once again dismantled the situation closing the inning with a pair of strikeouts to limit the damage.
The Nighthawks added a pair in the bottom of the fifth to lead it 4-0 before the Hawks got on the board in the next half inning on a double from
Austin Simpson to drive in
Joe Huffman.
NGU put Quincy behind the eight ball in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five more times to build a healthy 9-1 advantage.
QU responded well in the next half inning, getting three runs back on a pair of RBI singles from
Ben Dahlof and
Evan Davis as well as an RBI ground out for Huffman to narrow the margin to 9-4.
The Hawks never crossed home plate again for the remainder of the contest as UNG did so six times to close out the series finale victory and sweep.
Next up for the Hawks is a mid-week showdown with Valdosta State on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 20). First pitch from Valdosta, GA is slated for 4:00 PM CST.
