Hilo, Hawaii - The Quincy University women's basketball team concluded their Hawaii adventure with a win over Western Washington on Saturday night (Dec. 21). The Hawks went nearly 50 percent from the field in a 74-68 victory over the Vikings.
The Vikings started off the game with a bit of a run, but the Hawks were quick to get back on track with back-to-back two-point jumpers from Karysn Stratton and
Cymirah Williams.
Acheampomaa Danso scored the final four points of the Hawks in the first quarter, extending the Hawks lead to 17-12.
Western Washington's defense minimized the Hawks' efforts in the second quarter. The Hawks were forced to attack from close range, scoring eight of their twelve baskets within the paint.
Taylor Haase went 3-4 in the field and led the Hawks with six points in the second quarter.
The Hawks had their best shooting numbers after halftime, averaging 60 percent from the field and 50 percent from outside the key. The Vikings and Hawks went nearly basket for basket in the third quarter, yet the Hawks maintained their six point lead throughout the quarter. Stratton and Williams led the Hawks with eight and six points, respectively, in the third. Williams also hit every major stat category in the third, tabbing a few rebounds, one steal, one block, and one assist.
Both teams benefited from free throw shots in the final quarter with 35 shots awarded between the two teams. Western Washington limited the Hawks' shooting in the fourth, only allowing the Hawks seven shots from the field. However, three-pointers from
Mariann Blass and
Nicole McDermott and twelve made free throws helped the Hawks to victory for the final time in 2024.
Four Hawks scored in the doubles Saturday night in Williams (17), Stratton (16), Haase (12), and McDermott (10). Williams was the lone Hawk to record a double-double with 15 rebounds and was the lone Hawk to snatch at least one each of assists, blocks, and steals. Three Hawks dished out three assists each--Stratton, Blass, and
Janiece Dawson.
Quincy will ring in the new year with two home conference match ups January 3rd and 5th. On Friday, January 3rd, the Hawks will take on the Blue Tigers of Lincoln University for the first time since 2016, and on Sunday, January 5th, the Hawks will face the Triton of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
