Naperville, Ill. - The Hawks made the trip up to North Central College on Sunday (Dec. 15) for the North Central Women's College Open, their final contest of 2024. Quincy was led by fifth place finishes in the 145 B division from
Jazmine Garcia and 160 B division from
Jayla Jones along with a consolation championship in the 138 B division from
Jasmine Hopkins.
Many Hawks faced nationally ranked competition in the tournament's loaded field, but none more than Madeline Barton. Maddy, who is currently ranked 12th in the latest OpenMat national poll, opened 138 A action with a tech fall victory over Mikayla Wallace of Lyon before defeating #7 Emma Grimm of North Central by 6-1 decision. A quarterfinal match up with #4 Nanea Estrella of Iowa finally got the better of Barton who suffered a tech fall defeat. Barton dropped her final match against #3 Alex Gomez of McKendree, also by tech fall to conclude a run of three straight matches against top-10 national contenders in the 138 division.
Hopkins reached her 138 B consolation crown with three wins and two byes, passing the first championship round via bye before dropping her second round match to Delia Gulzow of Eastern Oregon by fall. Following another bye, Hopkins claimed victories over Amelia Howell and Taya Stanford of Carthage, both by fall to reach the consolation championship. In her final match, Hopkins delivered an 8-4 decision victory over Callie Alfieri of North Central for the consolation title.
Garcia made her way to a fifth place finish in 145 B thanks to a first round decision (6-0) over Isabel Worthing of Adrian before taking out Hattie Hobar of Baldwin Wallace by fall. In the quarterfinal, Garcia defeated Ariana Gonzalez of Gannon by fall until the run came to an end in the semis, where Caylynn Chandler of North Central dealt Garcia a tech fall loss. A decision loss to Keaton Hood of Albion in the next match sent Garcia to the fifth place tilt where she came away with a win by fall over Adele Senzig of Carthage.
Jones opened up 160 B action with a bye before defeating Hannah Baatz of Iowa Lakes by tech fall. In the quarterfinal, Ruby Rios of McKendree defeated Jones by tech fall, sending Jones to the consolation bracket where she won her next match by fall over Izabelle Nelson-Carrillo of Carthage. After dropping her fourth round consolation match by decision to Katt Mossinghoff, Jones got the job done in the fifth place match, defeating Abbey Boersma of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by fall.

The Hawks will have a few weeks off, not getting back into the action until a January 4th trip to Rock Island, IL for the Augustana College Duals. The event is set is kickoff at 9:00 AM.
