Box Score Kansas City, Mo. - The #18 Hawks dropped their first conference match of the season on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Rockhurst, falling to RU in four sets (26-28, 25-21, 23-25, 14-25) to move to 8-1 in GLVC play with four matches remaining in the regular season.
Set One
Rockhurst started the set with a lead and spent nearly all of the opening frame ahead, beginning with a 6-2 edge before upping the advantage to six at 11-5 shortly after.
QU started a comeback effort later in the set down 18-12, taking four of the next five points on three kills from
Emma Wijnbergen and an ace from
Susanna Beretti to make it 19-16 before using a three-point run a point later to draw within at point at 20-19.
The Hawks of Rockhurst rebuilt the lead to three at 23-20 before a four-point QU run gave the Hawks their first lead of the set and put Quincy a point away from stealing the frame. RU came back with five of the final seven points to take the first set 28-26.
Set Two
Quincy exploded onto the scene in the second set, using four and five-point runs as part of a 10-2 opening to the set. Rockhurst quickly got to work on cutting the deficit, narrowing the margin to three points later in the set at 14-11 on a four-point run.
RU drew within a point at 17-16 shortly after, prompting a three-point QU response to pull ahead 20-16 and give the Hawks the room they needed to get the job done down the stretch, coming away with a 25-21 winner in the second set.
Set Three
The opposing Hawks started off the third set with a bang, taking nine of the first 11 points, bringing about a six-point run from QU to erase the deficit and pull within a point at 9-8.
Quincy pulled within a point on numerous occasions throughout the middle and later stages of the set, including on a three-point run to make it 22-21 before trading points the rest of the way to a 25-23 winner for Rockhurst in the third set.
Set Four
RU got on Quincy early in the fourth set and never let up, building a substantial 15-3 advantage to open the set and riding out the wave to a comfortable 25-14 win in the set and 3-1 victory in the match to deal the top-ranked Hawks their first conference loss of the 2024 campaign.
