Hawks' Fourth Quarter Surge Creates Victory over Bulldogs

Kirksville, Mo. - The Quincy University women's basketball team took Highway 6 to Truman State University on Saturday evening (Nov. 23) for a non-conference match-up. The Hawks were nearly 80 percent from the field in the fourth quarter, helping them to victory over the Bulldogs.

The long-standing rivalry between Quincy and Truman State was evident from the start with a foul in the Hawks first drive at net. Acheampomaa Danso scored the first basket of the game on a free throw. Karsyn Stratton led the Hawks with six points in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs kept it a two-point game after the first ten minutes.

For every basket the Hawks made, the Bulldogs responded with one of their own in the first part of the second quarter. Back-to-back three pointers from Mariann Blass and Janiece Dawson pushed Quincy's lead to six points with four minutes to go. Truman State found their groove in the second quarter on defense, limiting the Hawks to just six baskets from the field.

Quincy was efficient from outside the key in the third going four for six in three-point shots. Nicole McDermott sank back-to-back threes, followed by another one from Blass to take fizzle the Bulldogs' lead.

The Hawks came out with their best quarter of the season in the fourth with a shooting percentage of 78 percent from the field, going three for three in three pointers. McDermott, Blass, and Dawson each had a basket from beyond the key while the other 17 points were divided equally among the Hawks squad.

Blass and McDermott led the Hawks with 19 points each. McDermott also posted five rebounds, six assists, and two steals Saturday evening. Danso led the Hawks with 10 rebounds and now ranks third in the GLVC in total rebounds behind teammate Cymirah Williams who had 8 rebounds on the night.

Saturday evening's win gives Quincy their best start over five games since the 2015-16 season. The Hawks are one of two teams in the GLVC with four wins thus far in the season with just over a week until conference play. The Hawks will host their Kid's Game on Tuesday at 11 a.m. before hitting a week-long road trip to begin conference play.
