Hawks Overcome Ichabods in Final Minutes

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team beat the Ichabods of Washburn University in comeback fashion on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 16). The Hawks first win over Washburn was led by graduate transfer Nicole McDermott who had 25 of the Hawks points and went 10-10 from the line.

The Hawks struggled toward the beginning of the game with the Ichabods' use of a full court press. Both teams went 8 for 16 in the first quarter, but fell victim to fouls and an early bonus that gave way to ten additional free throws for the Ichabods.

The Hawks began to cut the deficit in the second quarter with six points from McDermott. Janiece Dawson splashed a three-pointer and Taylor Haase took a jump shot in the paint to get the Hawks on even ground with the Ichabods with over six minutes to go in the second. McDermott and Karsyn Stratton sank free throws each to take a short lead before Washburn went on a run in the final minutes of the half.

The third quarter posed a stalemate for both teams. The Hawks kept the Ichabods outside the key, forcing them to rely on long range shots whereas the Ichabods allowed the Hawks in, but put the Hawks under considerable pressure. Acheampomaa Danso led the Hawks with six points in this quarter including a tip-in after two Hawks attempts.

The Hawks surged in the final ten minutes, going 8 for 15 and shooting 53 percent from the field. The Hawks flipped the script when Dawson drew a charge that resulted in Haase's jump shot in the paint that brought the Hawks within one. Ashlynn Arnsman scored a fading jumper in the paint and a free throw seconds later to tie the game for the Hawks.

Though the Ichabods tied things up with under a minute to go, the Hawks benefited from their foul bonus this time around. McDermott sank her final four free throws to solidify the win at 70-67.

Danso recorded her second double-double of the weekend with ten each points and assists. Six other Hawks scored, making Saturday afternoon's victory a team effort.

The Hawks will take the road next weekend to Kirksville, Missouri, for a non-conference match-up with the Bulldogs of Truman State.
