Hawks Hoist Hat in Triumph, Win First Battle for the Land of Lincoln

Lebanon, Ill. - For just the second time in the teams' history, the Quincy University football team beat McKendree University at Leemon Field, this time, with the newest rivalry trophy on the line. The Battle for the Land of Lincoln symbolizes the long-standing rivalry between Quincy University and McKendree University. The Hawks defense kept the Bearcats at bay, and Quincy held the steel top hat trophy high after a 34-10 victory.

Quincy was snuffed by the McKendree defense to start the game. The Hawks inched their way to their end zone on the second drive but fell victim to a ten-yard penalty that pushed them back. Michael Owens got the Hawks started with a 44-yard field goal to make this drive down the field count.

Teon Dollard had back-to-back long runs to give the Hawks some breathing room in the first quarter. Dollard dodged many Bearcats in his 34-yard run up the Hawks sideline. He finalized the drive on a 37-yard run. The Hawks finished the quarter up by ten.

Alex Schattin's muffed 50-yard punt started the Hawks' next scoring drive. After finding themselves on the one-yard line, the Hawks took four downs to inch their way over the end line into the end zone. The Hawks defense defended well against the Bearcats toward the end of the first half, diffusing two touchdown attempts. Derrick Miller intercepted a throw into the end zone, which was later revoked for a penalty on the Bearcats. Johnnie Robinson disrupted a pass into the end zone shortly after, forcing the Bearcats to try for a field goal.

McKendree found success at the beginning of the second half with a touchdown of their own, but it wasn't long before the Hawks came back with another score. Michael Owens completed the 31-yard field goal attempt with ease. Miller had his spotlight in the next drive, catching two short tosses from quarterback Drake Davis for another Hawk touchdown. Davis ended the scoring for the Hawks with a short rush to the left, helping the Hawks to a 34-10 victory over the Bearcats.

Kareem Carswell led the Hawks with 130 rushing yards, averaging just over eight yards per rush. Brock Inman and Joseph Webb led the Hawks with five solo block, Inman secured a tackle assist to lead the Hawks with six total. Owens scored 10 points for the Hawks in field goals and conversion kicks.

The Hawks face nationally-ranked University of Indianapolis next Saturday in the Circle City at 5 p.m. central time.
