Hawks Fall to Truman 28-21

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University NCAA football team faced Truman State University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19). The Hawks fell a touchdown short of success against the Bulldogs, losing 28-21.

Neither team was able to push past the end line in the first quarter. The Bulldogs kept the Hawks at just 32 yards total for the first fifteen, defending the Hawks' ground game well.

The Bulldogs continued their second drive from the first quarter and scored the first touchdown of the game on a long toss to the southwest corner of the field. Johnnie Robinson was able to get a touch on the conversion kick, blocking it and sending it wide right of the field goal. Truman State scored their second touchdown off a punt return and completed the two-point conversion following the play to take a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Hawks' five-play drive in the final two minutes of the half was fruitful. Quarterback Drake Davis went on a twelve-yard run and followed it with a pass to Derrick Miller that helped the Hawks into Bulldog territory. Davis' 40-yard launch to Luke Johnson just in front of the end zone was just enough for Quincy's first score of the game.

The Bulldogs liked the quick, 40-second scoring drive the Hawks had and wanted one of their own as well. On three plays and 37 yards, the Bulldogs expanded the lead on a 33-yard pass up their sideline to put the Hawks under another touchdown. Quincy got within field goal range and hoped for Michael Owens to send the 47-yard attempt through the steel poles, but a near miss kept the Hawks on underside of a 21-7 score.

The Hawks inched their way across the field halfway through the third quarter. A mixture of Davis tosses and the running back duo of Kamrin Cox and Kareem Carswell helped the Hawks to the house once more. Davis found Cox on a short lob and Cox took it all the way.

An interception off Davis' pass in the fourth quarter gave way to the Bulldogs' final touchdown of the game. Truman State took advantage of the long ball and sent the ball from Quincy's half to their end zone.

The Hawks closed the gap in the final five minutes of the game with a 17-yard throw to senior Demari Wilson in the end zone. The Hawks forced the Bulldogs into a short drive followed by a punt for one more chance for a touchdown. Quincy got stuck at midfield to end the game 28-21 to the Bulldogs of Truman State.

Davis went 34 for 51 on 316 passing yards in the game. Luke Johnson went long for 96 yards on five receptions and one touchdown. On defense, Brock Inman led the Hawks with 11 tackles, seven solo.

Alex Schattin punted for the Hawks with two touchbacks, his highest punt coming in at 68 yards.

The Hawks return home to host Westgate Christian University next Saturday, October 26th. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
