Box Score Springfield, Ill. – The Quincy University Hawks took on the fourth-seeded Illinois Springfield on the road Saturday (Jan. 20), snapping the Prairie Stars' four-game winning streak with a 69-66 victory.
The Hawks had their hottest start of the new year when
Mariann Blass sank a three pointer after the first minute of play. The Hawks' starting five took care of business in the first quarter, scoring all but one basket. The Prairie Stars edged the Hawks at the end to finish the quarter tied at thirteen.
Quincy found success in the paint in the second quarter, scoring 12 of the 17 points within close range. The burst in the paint helped the Hawks to lead at half.
The Hawks fell behind at the start of the third quarter.
Acheampomaa Danso finally got a biscuit in the basket for Quincy on a short jumper.
Ashlynn Arnsman faked a path and found an open lane to the basket for a free layup shortly after.
Quincy benefited from the Prairie Stars' physicality in the third quarter, drawing eight fouls before they committed one. The Hawks went into bonus in the first four minutes of the quarter, giving the Hawks three free points and more room to work.
Just like the first, the Hawks started the fourth quarter with a basket from downtown.
Mikayla Huffine tossed in two three pointers in the first plays of the quarter and Blass followed up with a sinker of her own. The Hawks were able to create a sizable lead and kept the Prairie Stars outside of reach until the final two minutes. The game grew physical during these final minutes, leading to fouls, bonus shots, and video replay situations. Despite the additional stops in play, the Hawks held off the Prairie Stars and grabbed their fifth win of conference play.
The Hawks travel to Drury next Saturday for a rematch over the Panthers on Thursday, January 25
th.
