WILBERFORCE, OH. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team traveled east to Ohio for a showdown with the Marauders of Central State University. The Hawks soundly defeated CSU in a three set sweep in which all three sets ended in the exact same outcome of 25-13 in favor of QU. Freshman,
Aleksandar Sosa, led all competitors in kills with 11 to fuel the Hawks to the comfortable victory.
Set One
After falling behind 2-0 to open the match, Quincy took seven of the next nine points to move ahead 7-4. A few Marauder errors, kills from
Raje Alleyne and
Zackary Zdrojeski and back-to-back service aces from Sosa.
QU remained ahead by two or less until a five-point run at the 12-9 mark put the Hawks in control 17-9. Kills from Sosa, CSU errors and blocks for Sosa and
Logan Gieseke supplied the run. The Hawks cruised for the remainder of the set to a 25-13 winner.
Set Two
Six of the first nine points went in favor of QU to open the frame to give the Hawks an early 6-3 lead which shortly after doubled to a 12-6 advantage thanks to another 6-3 run for Quincy.
A point later at 12-7, QU utilized a six-point run to effectively put the set out of reach at 18-7, shortly after taking the second set 25-13 on a service error from Central State.
Set Three
The Marauders clung to a slim lead 8-7 lead before a 5-1 run from Quincy put the Hawks ahead 12-9. A kill from
Logan Brouwer along with an CSU error and three kills from
Roman Deryckere made up the run for QU.
Central State cut the deficit to 2 at 15-13 until the Hawks busted out an explosive 10-point run to close out the set 25-13 and the match 3-0. Kills from Sosa, Deryckere and
AJ Goedheer along with blocks from Goedheer, Gieseke and Deryckere and a service ace from
Blake Hosic capped the run, ending the match.
Next up for the Hawks is a Friday (Jan. 19) matchup with Thomas More University. The Saints and Hawks tip-off from Crewstview Hills, KY at 6:00 PM.
