Hawks Sweep Peacocks in GLVC Showdown

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team continued its hot-streak with another victory on Saturday afternoon (Sep.30). Hosting the Peacocks of Upper Iowa University, the Hawks came away with the sweep (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) to push the winning-streak to 12 matches.

Set One:
The Hawks edged out a narrow advantage in the early going, down one at 4-3, a three point run, fueled by kills from Alice Pavan and Erin Matzke, along with an error made it 6-4.

UIU worked the score back to a draw at 10-10 before a five-point Quincy run on three Susanna Beretti kills and a kill and block from Matzke propelled QU to a 15-10 advantage. Upper Iowa never drew closer four, as the Hawks rolled on to a 25-20 winner in set one.

Set Two:
Quincy collected eight of the first 11 points of the set to jump out in front 8-3. The Hawks continued to keep the pressure up, pressing the lead further to five at 12-7 on a Beretti kill.

The Peacocks fought their way back to cut the deficit to one at 14-13, prompting a QU response of three points of its own to replenish the lead to 17-13. UIU responded, taking six of the next seven points to take a late lead 19-18.

A run of four from Quincy gave the lead right back to the Hawks, 22-19. Kills from Matzke and Luna Van Baars, along with a service error, got the job done down the stretch, giving QU a 25-22 victory and 2-0 advantage in the match.

Set Three:

Aside from an early 3-2 lead for QU, it was Upper Iowa playing with a lead in the early going until Quincy flipped the switch. Down 7-5, the Hawks claimed seven of the next nine points to lead it 12-9.

QU kept the Peacocks at arms length until a four-point run at 19-16 gave UIU the lead once more 20-19. The Hawks responded in a big way, taking advantage of two Upper Iowa errors, along with two kills and an ace to pull ahead 24-20.

Emma Wijnbergen slammed home the final point of the match, her team-leading 12th kill of the contest, to give QU a 25-22 win and 3-0 sweep of the match.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday evening (Oct. 4) taking a short break from conference play for a date with Hannibal-LaGrange University. First serve is slated for 7:00 PM at Pepsi Arena.
