Garden City, N.Y. - After a perfect 3-0 finish in the Quincy Invitational Tournament last week, the Quincy University women's volleyball team traveled to Garden City, NY for the Adelphi Tournament hosted by Adelphi University. QU won both of their matches on day one, (Sept. 15), defeating Daemen University three sets to one (17-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-20) and a sweep of University of New Haven (25-19, 25-15, 25-17).

Match One vs Daemen

Set One:

The Hawks took the first three points of the match on an error from Daemen and kills from Susanna Beretti and Erin Matzke. DU worked their way back into the match at the midway point, taking their first lead of the set at 11-10 as part of a three point run.

Quincy evened the score at 12-12 on a block from Matzke and Luna Van Baars along with a kill from Emma Wijnbergen before the Wildcats put together a huge seven-point run to head into the late stages of the set with a sizable 19-12 advantage. QU wasn't able to close the gap down the stretch, dropping set one 25-17.

Set Two:

In similar fashion to the first frame, the Hawks jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage on a Wildcat error along with a block from Wijnbergen and Matzke along with a kill from Matzke. Quincy took advantage of some miscues from their opponents to cash in on four free points from errors along with kills from Van Baars and Wijnbergen to make it 10-5.

DU fought their way back into the set, erasing the deficit to lead 16-15, prompting the Hawks to rip off a run of five-straight points to replenish the advantage to four at 20-16. QU held the Wildcats at bay, collecting the 25-21 set victory and even the match at a set a piece.

Set Three:

The Hawks took their first lead of the third set at 5-4 and never looked back, running away with a convincing win in the set.

A four-point run from the Hawks at 6-4 doubled up the Wildcats at 10-5. Two errors, a block from Van Baar and Alice Pavan along with a kill from Pavan fueled the run. Nine of the next 13 points went to Quincy, capped off by a service ace from Beretti to make it 19-9. The Hawks rolled to a 25-12 win in the set and 2-1 advantage in the match.

Set Four:

QU moved ahead early, using a five point run to open an 8-4 advantage. Kills from Wijnbergen and Pavan along with a block from Pavan and Brianna Merkel powered the run. Daemen used a five-point run to retake the lead at 13-12 at the midpoint of the fourth set.

Down one at 15-14, three-straight kills from Wijnbergen on feeds from Merkel put Quincy ahead 17-15. The Wildcats knotted the tally at 18-18 before a three-point run from QU made it 21-18.

DU took the next two points to draw within one, but the Hawks slammed the door, taking the final four points of the contest to close out a 25-20 set win and a 3-1 victory in the match.

Match Two vs New Haven

Set One:

Down 4-1 in the early going, Quincy used a five-point run to regain the lead 6-4. Three kills from Wijnbergen along with two Wildcat errors supplied the run. After surrendering a point, QU put together another big run, this one for eight points to blow the set open 14-5. Wijnbergen, Pavan and Van Baars collected kills during the stretch.

The Chargers never drew closer than five points as the Hawks finished off a 25-19 first set win.

Set Two:

Quincy scored the first and last point of set number two, leading from wire-to-wire. The Hawks began to pull away midway through the frame, leading 6-4, QU took six of the next eight, capped off by back-to-back kills from Beretti to lead by six at 12-6.

Later in the set, two aces from Van Baars along with a kill from Pavan pressed the lead to double digits at 22-12 heading down the stretch. A service ace from Merkel delivered a 25-15 victory in the set to lead 2-0 in the match.

Set Three:

Once again, the Hawks pulled out to an early lead at 5-2, taking advantage of errors from UNH. Staying in flow later in the set, Quincy pressed the advantage further to 13-7 on a service ace from Merkel.

New Haven used a four-point run later in the frame to lower the deficit to three at 17-14. The Chargers hung around until a five-point run from QU at 20-17 finished off the contest. Two kills from Wijnbergen and three aces from Beretti finished a 25-17 winner and 3-0 sweep of the match.

The Hawks will be back in action again tomorrow (Sept. 16) for two matches. The first contest against host Adelphi University is slated for 9:00 AM and match two against Wilmington University is slated for 3:30 PM.
