Match One vs Adelphi
Set One:
After falling behind 5-3 in the early stages of the set, Quincy used a six-point run to vault over AU for a 9-5 lead capped by a kill from
Luna Van Baars on a feed from
Brianna Merkel. The lead continued to grow as the set drew on, seeing QU take an eight-point lead at 18-10 on an error and kills from Pavan and Wijnbergen, one of her match-leading 23.
The Hawks stayed in control down the stretch to make good on a 25-17 win in the first frame. With 19 kills and only six errors in the set, Quincy outhit the Panthers by .238 en route to the win.
Set Two:
Errors plagued QU in the second set, nearly doubling their total from the first set with 11 in the frame. Even so, the Hawks were able to hang around until late in the set and collect more kills than AU despite only hitting .083 in the frame.
Quincy kept it close until a three-point Adelphi run at 19-17 gave the Panthers a lead they wouldn't give back in a 25-19 winner to draw the match at 1-1.
Set Three:
QU lead in the early stages 7-6 before AU took eight of the next nine points to open a six-point advantage at 14-8. The Hawks cut the deficit to four at 17-13 then used a five-point run to regain the lead 18-17 heading down the stretch.
Adelphi reclaimed the lead shortly after with a three-point run to make it 21-19. With their backs against the wall down 23-21, the Hawks took three-straight on an error, a kill from Wijnbergen and an ace from
Susanna Beretti to lead 24-23. AU took two of the next three to knot it at 25-25, but it was Quincy that got the job done taking the last two points on another kill from Wijnbergen and an error to take set three 27-25.
Set Four:
The Panthers took an 8-5 advantage early on forcing QU to play catchup. Shortly after the Hawks did just that, knotting the score at 10-10 on a service ace from Pavan. Quincy was able to take the lead at 16-15 on a three-point run featuring kills from Pavan and Van Baars along with an ace from Wijnbergen.
The Hawks never looked back from there closing out a 25-19 set win on an ace from Beretti to win the match 3-1.
Match Two vs Wilmington
Set One:
Set one proved to be the most interesting of the three in the match, finding the Hawks battling tit for tat with the Wildcats up until the midpoint of the set. Down 13-12, WU went on a six-point tear to lead by five at 18-13.
Quincy answered with four points of their own to pull back within one. Two kills from Wijnbergen along with an ace from Beretti and an error made it 18-17 Wilmington. QU took the lead shortly after on another run of three capped by an ace from Wijnbergen to pull in front 20-19. The Wildcats pushed to the brink but couldn't make it happen in the clutch as Wijnbergen slammed a 25-23 winner to the hardcourt to put her squad ahead 1-0 in the match.
Set Two:
Wilmington hung tough staying within one point until a three-point Hawks run at 11-10 built the advantage to 14-10. UW never drew closer than three after that point as Quincy cruised to a 25-15 victory setting up the sweep opportunity.
QU committed just three errors while outhitting WU by over .300 along with 10 more kills in a dominant performance in the second set.
Set Three:
In very similar fashion to the prior set, the third frame started off close until the midway point of the set where the Hawks completely took over. Up two at 11-9, Quincy used a three-point run to press the lead to five at 14-9.
Later in the set at 16-11 Quincy, a four-point run for the Hawks effectively ended the match blowing open the set 20-11. QU took five of the last seven points to close out a 25-13 set win and match sweep.
The Hawks are back in action next Friday (Sep. 22) at 6:00 PM in Rolla, MO to open the GLVC Conference slate against the Miners of Missouri S&T.
