Hawks Bust More Records, Beat Timberwolves 6-3

Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team took the win in their second game of the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday (May 19), beating the Northwood Timberwolves 6-3. Luke Napleton and the Quincy pitching squad wrote new records into the books this afternoon.

Both teams battled in the first four innings without a run for their efforts, but Northwood snuck in a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead. The Hawks continued to struggle through the top of the fifth inning, leaving Joe Huffman on second without a way home.

Griffin Kirn struck out the lead-off hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning, breaking the program record for team strikeouts in a season (513). The previous record of 512 strikeouts occurred over 62 games while the Hawks' current strike force sent 513 batters back to the dugout in just over 54 games.

The Hawks were hot in the sixth inning, taking the lead on two hits. Gino D'Alessio brought Brock Boynton in on an RBI double. Dustin Dupont's sac bunt sent D'Alessio to third to await Luke Napleton's right-field home run. Kirn and his defense kept the Timberwolves clean through the bottom of the sixth.

Quincy added two when Huffman cracked one over the left field brick wall in the top of the seventh inning. Napleton hit his 29th home run in the top of the eighth inning not only to secure the GLVC home runs in a season record but to lead all three divisions of the NCAA in home runs this season. His solo home run capped the Hawks' side of the scoreboard for the afternoon.

Roman Harrison stepped in after Kirn worked seven full innings, striking out six. Harrison struck out one and gave up one run in an inning and half before Elijah Ecton finished the game for the Hawks, striking out the final batter.

The Hawks take the Timberwolves on again Saturday (May 20) at noon. The winner of the best of three series between the Hawks and Timberwolves will move onto the Super Regional, hosted by the highest remaining seed.
