QUINCY — Home runs by Austin Simpson, Luke Napleton and Lance Logsdon, plus a stellar relief effort from Nolan Harrison, allowed the Quincy University baseball team to overcome a four-run deficit and defeat Maryville 8-4 Saturday afternoon in the final game of a four-game series at QU Stadium.
The victory gives Hawks (22-9, 12-4 GLVC) three victories out of four in the series and moved them into a tie into second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with Maryville.
Harrison, a freshman from Mount Vernon, Ill., came on in relief of starter Jay Hammel in the sixth inning. He allowed three hits and one walk in four shutout innings.
Maryville had two runners on base with one out in the seventh, but Harrison struck out Matthew Schuler and got Jacob Hager to ground out to first baseman Lance Logsdon to end the threat. Maryville had two more runners on base with two outs in the ninth, but Harrison struck out Harrison to finish the game.
The Saints took the lead with four runs off Quincy starter Jay Hammel in the third inning. Hammel limited the damage, however, by striking out the side when the Saints had the bases loaded with no outs.
Back-to-back home runs by Napleton and Logsdon ignited the Hawks' comeback. Napleton's home run to left field was his 17th of the season, and Logsdon's homer to left-center was his sixth of the season.
The Hawks took advantage of defensive shifts by the Saints to score four runs in the sixth. Gino D'Alessio singled through an open hole at second base to lead off the inning, and Austin Simpson's grounder down the third-base line moved D'Alessio to third. Napleton greeted reliever Drake Downing with a check-swing single to a hole at second base, scoring D'Alessio.
Logsdon then tripled to center field, driving in two runs. Nolan Wosman drove in Logsdon with a sacrifice fly.
Quincy wrapped up the scoring in the eighth. D'Alessio's popup dropped in right field, and he advanced to second on a throwing error. Simpson then hit his 11th home run of the season to right.
The first five hitters in the Quincy batting order — D'Alessio, Simpson, Napleton, Logsdon and Wosman — all had two hits each.
