ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Fresh off their first loss in two calender month's on Friday (Nov. 3) at McKendree, the Hawks made the short trip over to the #3 Tritons of University Missouri - St. Louis for a Saturday afternoon (Nov. 4) showdown of nationally ranked squads.
Quincy struggled to find traction in a three set sweep (16-25, 17-25, 23-25) at the hands of the undefeated Tritons.
Set One:
The Hawks stayed with it until a six-point run from UMSL at 6-5, put the Tritons up big at 12-5. Errors plagued QU during the set, committing 11 of them to 11 kills for a .000 hitting percentage.
Quincy drew within five at 19-14 on back-to-back kills from
Susanna Beretti and a block from
Emma Wijnbergen and
Alice Pavan, but it was all Tritons down the stretch, closing out a 25-16 victory in the first set.
Set Two:
Missouri - St. Louis didn't let up, taking the first five points, before kills from Beretti and Wijnbergen put the Hawks on the board 5-2. UMSL took five of the next seven to open a 10-4 advantage.
The Hawks couldn't get much going until taking five of six points at 15-6 to pull within five at 16-11. Shortly after, QU cut the lead to four at 20-16 on two kills from Pavan, prompting the Tritons to take five of the next six and the set 25-17.
Set Three:
Missouri - St. Louis looked as if they were going to try and seal the third frame early, jumping out to a 13-6 advantage. Quincy cut the lead back to five on a kill from Beretti and an error to make it 13-8.
Later in the set, UMSL pressed its lead to nine at 19-10, prompting a six-point run from QU to get back into the set 19-16. Kills from
Mattie Reynolds and
Erin Matzke along with an ace from
Amber Glen and three errors fueled the run.
After two Triton points, kills from Reynolds, Pavan and an ace from Wijnbergen cut the deficit to 21-19. Shortly after, the Hawks trailed by one at 23-22 on an error and another Beretti kill.
Another UMSL kill forced match point, 24-22, followed by a Beretti kill on a feed from
Brianna Merkel to make it 24-23. Missouri - St. Louis took the final point for a 25-23 set and 3-0 match victory.
The Hawks are back in action next weekend, hosting UINDY on Friday night and Lewis on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 10-11) for the final regular season, and conference matches of the year. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
