Courtney Boyd got their heavily-anticipated first win this Saturday (Nov. 25) over William Jewell. The Hawks start conference 1-0 behind a career-high performance from
Janiece Dawson who had 29 points.
The Hawks turned a new leaf over Thanksgiving break, by leading the Cardinals throughout most of the first half, and maintaining the lead until the halftime buzzer. The Hawks were just over 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three at the half. Dawson scored 16 points in the first half, outscoring her last full-game career-high by three points.
Acheampomaa Danso was a menace in the paint, scoring six points, securing seven rebounds and a block in the first half alone.
The Hawks brought the excitement back out for the third quarter, where the Hawks had another scoring frenzy quarter. Quincy pushed the lead to 15 points halfway through the third, creating some much-needed confidence. Five different Hawks scored in the third quarter with seven points coming off the bench. Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth quarter, shooting less than 20 percent from the field.
Dawson led the Hawks in points (29) and tied for top rebounds (9) with Danso.
Mikayla Huffine had 14 points on Saturday, her own career-high in brown and gold.
The Hawks have a quick turnaround and will face Drury at home, Monday (Nov. 27) at 7 pm. Quincy looks to keep the momentum going into a busy week of conference play, first against Drury on Monday, then following with Missouri S&T and Maryville this coming weekend.
