WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Fresh off a victory over the previously undefeated Knights of Bellarmine to close out the regular season, the Hawks traveled back to West Terre Haute to try and avenge a loss earlier in the season, with a win against Saint Mary of the Woods College in the MSFL Tournament. Quincy led 7-3 at the half, but ultimately came up short in a 23-13 loss to conclude the season at 5-3.
For the sixth time in eight games this season, the Hawks found the end zone on their first drive of the game.
CJ Jackson shouldered the brunt of the load during the scoring effort, carrying the ball five times for 50 yards and the score to put QU ahead 7-0 on a
Kaden Kaimann PAT.
Quincy followed up the score with a fumble recovery from Trea Mcvey and a missed field goal attempt in the ensuing drive, but couldn't convert. The Hawks defense flourished in the first half, only allowing a field goal in the final minute of the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room at the half.
QU opened its first drive of the second half in great field position at the St. Mary 30-yard line after a big sack from
Bryce Vaught and a tackle for loss from
Owen Kiso forced the Pomeroys to punt from their own nine-yard line. Three plays in, the Quincy drive was upended by a fumble at the SMWC 40.
St. Mary found the end zone for the first time in the contest at the 2:26 mark in the third to lead it 10-7. Two plays into the following QU drive, a fumble from the Hawks at their own 44 set up SMWC in good field position with 1:45 remaining in the third.
The Pomeroys made good on their second touchdown of the contest three minutes into the fourth to lead 17-7. St. Mary got the ball at the 50 to open its next drive and hit pay dirt two plays later to build the advantage to 23-7 with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Hawks answered with a scoring drive of their own., illustrated by Quincy QB,
Marcus Oberriter, who completed three passes for 84 yards, highlighted by a 70-yard connection with
Nasir Carson to make it 23-13 following an unsuccessful two-point-conversion.
Neither side appeared on the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, giving SMWC a 23-12 victory to end the Hawks season.
