Hawks Hot Streak Fizzles in Overtime Defeat

Kirksville, Mo. - The Quincy University football team broke its four-game unbeaten streak this Saturday (Oct. 7) at Truman State University. A jolt of offense in the first quarter stunned the Bulldogs who later turn the tides and beat the Hawks 33-27 in overtime.

The Hawks attacked quickly against the regionally ranked Bulldogs, scoring touchdowns on the first two drives of the game. Quincy inched its way to the second yard line when Teon Dillard rushed up the gauntlet for the first touchdown of the game. The Bulldogs fumbled the kickoff, handing the ball back to the Quincy offense. Anthony Gilpin Jr. set the Hawks up nicely on the fumble return, returning 37 yards to the Truman State 3 yard line. Eight seconds separated the fumble recovery and Quincy's second touchdown in the game. The final Quincy drive in the quarter saw a 33-yard deep pass from quarterback Drake Davis to Garrett Drew in the end zone, ending the quarter up 20-0.

The Bulldogs woke up in the second quarter, adding two short touchdowns to their side of the scoreboard. Despite the Bulldogs sudden surge in scoring, this was the first time in their 10-game history that the Hawks led the scoreline going into halftime against Truman State.

Truman State took over in the third quarter, scoring a 36-yard field goal and a 1-yard rush up the middle to overtake the Hawks 24-20. A long first drive in the first quarter kept Quincy back in the game, putting the Hawks over the Bulldogs 27-24. The final drive of regulation saw a 31-yard field goal made from the Bulldogs, sending the teams into overtime for the first time this season.

The Hawks started overtime with possession and had the golden opportunity to beat the ranked Bulldogs. The Cinderella story was soured by Truman State's Jake Closser who intercepted in the end zone and set the Bulldogs up for their final scoring play.

Despite the scoreline, this GLVC matchup showcased much of the Hawks' grit that has built over the last five weeks at home. Quincy out-rushed the Bulldogs by 62 yards and had a total offense that topped the Bulldogs by 30 yards. The Hawks look to bounce back after this loss during the Battle of the Birds next weekend at William Jewell.
