QUINCY, Ill. – "Great moments are born from great opportunities," Herb Brooks said in Miracle (2004).

The previous 365 days brought us some great moments from Quincy University student – athletes. We, in the communications office, decided to create a top 10 moments of the year list. From program firsts, to coaching accolades, to historic seasons, it's time to present the top 10 moments in Hawk athletics during 2022.

10) Women's basketball collects its first win at Illinois – Springfield since 2015.

• Back on December 1^st, the Hawks went into the capital city and knocked off the Prairie Stars by the score of 91-80. This was the first win for the program since January 8, 2015.

9) King of Tackles

• Senior linebacker and Captain Peyten Chappel planted himself in the football record book as the new career holder for total and solo tackles. Over his career, he appeared in 44 games making 383 total tackles, with 225 of them being solo stops. He also sits in 2^nd for career assisted tackles with 158.

8) Lucky 13: Jayle Jennings tosses no-hitter

• After falling in game 1 to Rockhurst University on senior day, Jayle Jennings got the starting nod in the circle for game 2. Jennings went the complete 5 innings, striking out 3 and walking 4 batters in the 8-0 win over Rockhurst. This was the 2^nd straight season a Hawk pitcher has thrown a no-hitter. Mac Kenzie Collier threw a perfect game on May 1, 2021.

7) Gem City reunion

• On March 9^th, it was announced that Steve Hawkins was making a return to the QU men's basketball program. He had previously been the head boss of the Hawks from 1990 to 2000 where he went 137-111. Fast forward to the current season, they sit at 7-5 (3-1 GLVC). The Hawks started GLVC play by knocking on nationally – ranked University of Indianapolis and followed that up by taking down Lewis University on a last second shot by Zion Richardson.  

6) Men's lacrosse picks up program's first victory

• In its third year of existence, the men's lacrosse program picked up their first win against Wheeling University on February 13^th by the score of 13-3. The game included Jordan Ernst scoring a program record 6 goals in the contest.

5) Coach Kathelene Kim wins GLVC Coach of the Year

• The women's lacrosse team under the direction of Coach Kim went 6-10 during the spring of 2022, including picking up the program's first conference win against Lewis on April 14^th by the score of 13-9. The team also saw a new program record for goals in a single game as Danielle Robinson scored 12 goals on March 4^th against Missouri Baptist University. Kim picked up her first GLVC Coach of the Year, voted on by the conference coaches.

4) Husband and Wife both pick up first career wins as head coaches

• How many athletic departments can say they had a husband and wife that both picked up their first career wins as the head coach of their respective sport? It started with head baseball coach Matt Schissel as his team took extra innings to defeat Missouri Western on February 20^th. On September 18^th, hosting Missouri S&T the women's soccer team came from behind to defeat the Miners to give Mackenzie Schissel her first career win.

3) Drive for Five: QU debuts 5 new programs

• New programs were the theme of the year for the QU athletics family and all have seen immediate success. Sprint football was the first program to debut on the road at Fontbonne University, which they picked up the win. Taylor Klusmeyer scored the lone touchdown from 3 yards out to give the Hawks the win.
• Both swimming programs under the direction of Bryan Christiansen hit the pool in October for the first time. The men's program knocked off new Division I program University of Southern Indiana for their first win on October 22^nd, while the women defeated Simpson College on November 5^th.
• The wrestling teams debuted on November 5^th and collected their first wins four days later in a tri-match with Fontbonne and Missouri Baptist. The inaugural home duel came on December 7^th against Morton College, where both teams picked up clean sweeps.    

2) Seven heaven: Baseball reaches 7^th consecutive regional

• The Hawks compiled an overall record of 37-25 during the 2022 campaign. Under first year head coach Matt Schissel, they reached the NCAA Midwest Super Regional, after winning the Davenport University regional where they played fellow GLVC member Illinois – Springfield in a best-of-3 series. QU would fall one win short of advancing to the World Series.
• Lance Logsdon broke the career home run and RBI records during the season. He currently sits at 36 home runs and 159 runs batted in. Spencer Walker brought home the first national gold glove in program history.  

1) Historic Season

• The 2022 women's volleyball campaign was one for the record books. From sweeping a Division I opponent, to top 25 rankings, to winning their first 14 games of the season and many more, there was excitement in the community surrounding the volleyball team. A sold out Pepsi Arena for the program's first NCAA regional appearance against Northern Michigan. The first All-American honors picked up by Mattison Norris and Makayla Knoblauch. Alice Pavan winning GLVC Freshman of the Year to keep the award in Quincy as teammate Emma Wijnbergen won it in 2021.
