Women's Volleyball Ties Program's Best Start

DETROIT, MICH. – The Women's Volleyball team opened up play at the Wayne State University tournament on Friday (September 2). They began the tournament by sweeping the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (25-11, 25-16, 25-21). The Hawks ended the day by taking on the hosts, the Wayne State University Warriors and won in 4 sets (25-11, 23-25, 25-12, 25-16).
 
This is the first time since 1994 that the program has started a season 6-0.
 
Match 1 vs Pitt – Johnstown
The match opened as a tightly contested with both teams trading points. The largest lead in the early going was a four point margin. Quincy's lead would steadily grow in the middle part of the set. The Hawks would end set 1 on a 9-1 run.
 
Quincy jumped out to a 9-3 run, while the Mountain Cats attempted to close the lead. The Hawk lead would swell to 21-10 on kills by Mattison Norris and Makayla Knoblauch. UPJ gave the Hawks the 2nd set win on five straight errors to end the set.
 
Set 3 was tight in the early going. Throughout the whole set both teams were within 3 points at most. The Hawks pulled away in the final stage to the take set and the match in straight sets.

Match 2 vs Wayne State
Quincy grabbed the lead at 4-3 and never looked back in the opening set against the Warriors. Their lead expanded to 9-4, forcing WSU to call a timeout. After the timeout, the Hawks went on a 9-3 run to run away with the opening set.
 
The 2nd set, the Hawks had to come from behind as the Warriors jumped out to a 6-1 lead. WSU led by as many as 9, but QU went on a 6-0 run to close the cap to 17-14. The Hawks would tie the set at 20 apiece. WSU took the set 25-23.
 
QU jumped out to the 5-0 lead in the 3rd set. WSU tried to make a comeback, but QU held them at bay. The Hawks took the 3rd set by the score of 25-12.   
 
The first time this season that the Hawks have gone past 3 sets and they responded well. In the early going, the set was back and forth. After WSU tied it at 7, the Hawks grabbed the lead, which ballooned to 9 points at 19-10. QU would take the set 25-16.
