Softball comes up short in conference doubleheader on the road

Chatham, Ill.—The Quincy University Softball team traveled to Illinois-Springfield for a GLVC doubleheader on Friday (4/1) and got swept by the scores of 3-0 and 6-5.

GAME 1
It was a pitchers' duel to start the game as Bailee Highbarger and Payton Long did not allow a hit until Allyson Maynard doubled with 2 outs in the top of the 4th. The Hawks would strand her as Bailey Mitchell flied out to center field. Highbarger allowed the Prairie Stars first hit on a bunt single in the bottom of the 4th.

The game would stay scoreless until the bottom of the 6th inning. Illinois-Springfield struck for three runs. The Hawks would commit two errors on back to back batters to give the Prairie Stars a 2-0 lead. UIS would make it 3-0 on a 2 out double.

GAME 2
The Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars struck first in the bottom of the 1st. They would score on an error by Eileen McGinnis to make it 1-0. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Prairie Stars would score 2 runs on a wild pitch to extend their lead to 3-0.

The Hawks would claw into that lead as Madeline Ruzicka hit a one out double in the top of the 3rd which scored Allyson Maynard and Taylor Downen. In the bottom of the 4th, UIS added two more runs on an RBI single and then a wild pitch. The game moved to the 5th inning, UIS had success getting baserunners, which resulted in a two out RBI single to make it 6-2.

Quincy would try to make things interesting in the top of the 7th. Jayle Jennings and Taylor Downen hit back-to-back singles. Maynard came to the plate and would hit a 3-run home run to make it 6-5 UIS.
