Quincy, Ill.—The Quincy University Baseball team wrapped up their opening conference series against the 13
th ranked Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars and took game 4 by the score of 7-6 behind a strong start from
Jay Hammel.
After Hammel struck out the first 5 of 6 Prairie Star batters he faced, the Hawk offense came alive in the bottom of the 3
rd inning.
Gino D'Alessio and
Zach Parks reached base, setting up
Dayson Croes, who took the 1-1 pitch and sent it over the right field wall to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 4
th, Quincy added 2 more runs to make it 5-0 over UIS.
Lance Logsdon singled to center field that scored
Joe Roscetti. The next batter D'Alessio doubled to left field, scoring Logsdon. After a quiet 5
th inning, UIS got on the board with 4 runs to make it a 5-4 game. Kal Youngquist singled to left center. With runners on the corners, Brant Vanaman tripled off the wall in right center to make it 5-3. Then, Brayden Gorecki reached on an error by
Lance Logsdon that scored Vanaman to make it 5-4.
As the game moved to the bottom of the 6
th, D'Alessio grounded out to the third baseman to score
Logan Voth. The next batter
Zach Parks grounded out to second to score Roscetti to make it 7-4 Hawks.
Sam Stephens came on in relief of Hammel in the top of the 8
th. Stephens recorded two strikeouts and completed the inning in an impressive eight pitches. Nick Mayerhofer would homer to right field in the top of the 9
th to make it 7-6
