The Quincy University women's basketball team fell 57-55 in a tight match against Lewis University at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (February 5) afternoon.
The Hawks' first points came with 8:19 left in the first quarter, with Sarah Nelson hitting a layup to tie the game at 2. However, after this, QU fell far behind, only scoring two more baskets during the rest of the quarter, with the score at the buzzer being 20-6 Flyers.
The second quarter went better for the Hawks, though they remained unable to take the lead. The first basket of the quarter came courtesy of an Emma Knipe layup, making the score 23-8. While the Hawks were able to narrow the point deficit, it was ultimately not by much, with the game going to halftime with a 32-19 score in favor of the Flyers.
The third quarter was when the Hawks started a comeback. They drew the half's first blood, with another layup from Nelson making the score 32-21 with 9:26 remaining. The game became largely defensive after that, with minutes going by between baskets. It took until more than six and a half minutes had passed for the Hawks to let the Flyers score. A three-pointer from Grace Flanagan with just three seconds left brought the score to its closest deficit since the game's first few minutes, with the tally at the end being 37-34 Flyers.
The fourth quarter started slow for QU, not scoring until Beth Matas Martin turned a steal into a layup, and followed it up with a free throw to make the score 42-37 Flyers with 7:45 remaining. The Hawks fought tooth and nail from there, but were unable to tie the game despite coming close numerous times. The game ended 57-55 Flyers.
Dami Adeyinka led the Hawks with 17 points in 36 minutes of play. Beth Matas Martin scored 15 points in 39 minutes, and Marta Rivera scored 10 points in 16 minutes.
