QUINCY, IL---The Quincy University men's volleyball team triumphed over the Saint Xavier University Cougars 3-2 in a nail-biting matchup at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Jan 22) afternoon.
Â
1st Set
Â
After falling behind early, the Hawks scored their first kill of the game courtesy of Nathan Lawton. However, the Hawks struggled offensively during the half, during which the Cougars simply landed more kills and made fewer errors. The Hawks lost the set 25-19.
Â
2nd Set
Â
The Hawks caught fire during set two, starting off with a kill from Niall Burton and a service ace from Bryce Jones. The Hawks stayed dominant, tightening up the errors and riding another service ace from Francisco Salinger to a 25-18 win.
Â
3rd Set
Â
Set three was very messy, with the Cougars making error after error throughout and the Hawks being the first on the board through another service ace from Jones. Unfortunately, the Hawks were unable to keep up offensively, and ultimately lost the set 27-25.
Â
4th Set
Â
The fourth set was even closer, but the Hawks were ultimately saved through the Cougars making four more service errors than they did. Otherwise, the Hawks were first on the board thanks to a Lawton kill and they were able to eke out a 25-23 victory.
Â
5th Set
Â
The final set was low-scoring, but thanks to some really tight ball played by the Hawks and some extraordinarily sloppy ball played by the Cougars, who made a number of errors throughout, the Hawks won the set 15-11, and the game 3-2.
Â
Francisco Salinger led the Hawks with 15 points and 10 kills, with Eddie Jakubauskas scoring 13.5 points with 13 kills.
