CALEDONIA, MI. – The Quincy University women's soccer team began its season at Davenport and won 1-0 on Friday (Sept. 3) night.
Senior Lauren Crane fired a shot in the ninth minute, but the Panthers' keeper was able to make the stop. This strike by Crane was the Hawks lone shot on goal in the first half.
Goalie Oliva Kindt made saves in the 11th and 16th minute of the game. The Hawks attack put more pressure on Davenport in the second half as they forced the Panthers to make seven saves.
"For the majority of the second half we had the pressure on," Head Coach Samuel Thomas said.
Aliyah Rottger and Morgan Evans each had shots on goal in the 48th and 51st minute, and Grace Ledbetter had a strike toward the bottom right of the frame that was stopped five minutes later.
The Hawks had a goal called back because of an offsides then hit the post in the second period of play as well.
Meagan Mero had a shot on goal in the 71st minute that required the Panthers to make a team save as the game remained scoreless. Then, Lexi Porchia struck a ball on frame but it was stopped on the bottom left corner in the 87th minute.
"We had a feeling a goal was coming," said Thomas who was pleased with his team's ability to create opportunities in the second half.
Less than a minute later Sydney Gorman crossed the ball into traffic from the corner of the 18-yard box, and the ball hit off a Panthers defender. The ball proceeded to hit the crossbar, and then came down and crossed the goal line which made it an own goal. This proved to be the game-winner in the 88th minute as the Hawks prevailed in dramatic fashion.
Quincy had eight shots on goal and used Kindt, who played 85 minutes, and Luisa Weinhaendler, who played about five minutes, to compile the clean sheet.
The Hawks limited Davenport to just four shots on goal, and Kindt was able to make all the stops on those attempts.
Thomas played a bulk of his roster during the contest, using 13 players off the bench alone in the season opener.
"We should be relatively rested for Sunday's game (at Saginaw Valley)," Thomas said. "One of our biggest strength is going to be our depth,"
