QUINCY, IL. –
The Quincy University men's soccer team opened its season against Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday (September 2) afternoon and lost 3-2.
The Hawks scored in the 9th minute after
Kyle Swanner played a ball forward to
Cole Hayes and scored to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. The Rangers equalized the game in the 18th minute on a free kick from Max Ludwig outside the 18-yard box.
Nine minutes later, Wisconsin-Parkside took the lead on a Rade Novakovich goal assisted by Matteo Quintero to make the score 2-1.
Wisconsin-Parkside scored again in the 36th minute after the Hawks defense brokedown, and UWP's Bryan Torres was there to punch it in.
The Rangers scored three unanswered goals in an 18-minute span to close out the first half and led 3-1 at the intermission.
The intensity of the game picked up in the second half when Hayes got fouled in the box which resulted in a penalty kick.
Jack Rhead scored the penalty kick to make the score 3-2 as he struck the ball right into the center of the net.
Cole Hayes subsequently left the game after the hard foul, but then later re-entered.
Hayes was issued a yellow card in the 66th minute, and Hasan had been issued a card 11 minutes earlier as the game grew more physical.
With 20 minutes left in the contest, it appeared that
Alsadiq Hasan scored an equalizer on a ball that hit the post and then bounced into the net. The Hawks celebrated, but then the goal was taken off the board because it was an indirect kick. This means that someone else has to touch the ball before it can be taken as a shot on goal. QU trailed 3-2.
The Hawks earned four corner kicks in the second half as well, and their quality of play seemed to increase, but the two-goal first half deficit proved to be too much.
