MARQUETTE, MI. – After opening the season in Quincy on Thursday, the QU men's soccer team made the trek up to Marquette, Michigan to take on Northern Michigan.
Jack Rhead buried a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to secure the road victory on Sunday (Sept. 5).
The Hawks gave up three goals in Thursday's opener and made sure that did not happen again on Sunday. QU's back line and midfield limited the Wildcats to a single shot on goal and eight total shots in the contest.
Quincy laced eight total shots on goal in the game and both the offensive and defensive persistence paid off in the 73rd minute.
In the 72nd minute, NMU sent a shot towards the net, but it was saved by senior goalkeeper
Michele Barletta, his lone save of the game.
Less than a minute after the save, Quincy was fouled hard and a red card was given to Northern Michigan.
Jack Rhead stepped up and nailed the kick and gave the Hawks the lead.
The Wildcats did get off three shots in the last 12 minutes of the game but none were on frame.
QU earned their first shutout win of the year, as it was also Barletta's fifth shutout win as a Hawk.
