SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Quincy University tennis team competed in a two-day tournament hosted by Illinois-Springfield to begin their fall season on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 11 & 12). The women's squad swept the singles Draw "A" bracket and also won the top doubles bracket.
Laila Leist-Alston entered the weekend as the number one seed in the Draw A bracket which included each team's number 1-4 athletes.
Steffi Lao survived a three-set thriller in the opening round by winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 over UIS's Franca Bucco. Leist-Alston and Lao each made it to the championship singles match, but because they were competing for the same team, the final was not played.
In the women's Draw A doubles bracket, Leist-Alston and freshman
Blanca Salas Cruz made it all the way to the doubles final. In the final match, the duo found themselves behind 3-1 but won the next seven of eight games to win the bracket final 8-4.
On the men's side, Ivan Mimica made it to the men's singles Draw B final. Mimica won the first set of the final matchup 6-0 but dropped the next two sets 6-3, 10-5.
The tennis program will have a quick turnaround as they travel to McKendree University on Tuesday (Sept. 14) at 2:00 PM.
