Quincy, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team resumed the series with Rockhurst University in a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 24). The Hawks split the day after losing the first game, 4-3, then shut out Rockhurst, 18-0, in the second game.
Game 1
Rockhurst scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning after a double and an error. This was followed by a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The visiting Hawks scored once again in the top of the fifth as they loaded the bases. One run came in from a throwing error which was compounded after a two-RBI double. RU led 4-0.
Quincy responded in the bottom of the fifth when Dayson Croes led off with a single to left field, and Lance Logsdon hit a one-hop double off the left field wall. With both runners now in scoring position, Michael Nielsen and Nolan Wosman brought in the first two runs for the Hawks with a couple of ground out RBI. QU trailed 4-2.
Once again the Hawks put things together for another run when Croes hit a RBI single to the right side to make it a 4-3 game. Unfortunately, the Hawks were kept quiet in their final at bat in the seventh and fell by that score.
Game 2
Following a ceremony in which head coach Josh Rabe had his jersey retired, the Hawks did not wait to score in game two. Jacob Kalusniak led off with a single up the middle and Croes reached on a hit by pitch. Quincy provided some early-game fireworks with back-to-back homeruns from Lance Logsdon and Michael Nielsen to make the score 4-0. QU scored one more time in the first as the Rockhurst pitcher committed a balk to score Wosman and make it 5-0.
Croes later destroyed a home run over the right field wall for two RBI on the day. This extended their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Quincy's offense continued to put on a show in the bottom of the third and scored a total of seven runs. Kalusniak hit a RBI double, Croes hit a three-run home run, Nielsen hit a two-run jack, and Joe Roscetti hit a RBI single. Quincy went ahead 14-0.
Luke Napleton and Eric Tipton both hit bombs to the opposite field in the bottom of the sixth to extend QU's lead to 17-0. The Hawks went on to win 18-0.
Spencer Walker helped toss QU's first shutout of the season after going five strong innings. The Mapleton, Illinois native allowed just three hits, one walk, and struck out seven in the win. Seniors John Hurayt and Willie Sanchez came out of the pen for an inning each to keep the goose egg intact.
