QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team welcomed Rockhurst to QU Stadium on Friday afternoon (Apr. 23) in a game that had the set-up of a must-win. Senior left-hander,
Riley Martin, did what he does best in the series opener as he recorded 16 strikeouts for the fourth time this season. QU won in seven innings, 11-1, and Martin broke the all-time wins record as a Hawk pitcher with 28.
Rockhurst looked to spoil the fun in the first inning after a couple of walks and a RBI double to score the first run of the game and make it 1-0. Quincy had no intentions of staying behind for long. After a walk and a single, Michael Nielsen hit an opposite field ground rule double to tie the game, 1-1. Nolan Wosman later walked to load the bases and Gino D'Alessio got the job done with a sacrifice fly and Joe Roscetti hit an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the second inning, Quincy went on the attack again and got a leadoff triple by Brock Boynton. He was brought home by Jacob Kalusniak's ground ball to shortstop to give QU a 4-1 lead.
The Hawks scored once again in the bottom of the third after a couple of hits to the left side with two outs. Boynton hit one back up the middle to bring in one more for QU, 5-0.
QU welcomed the bottom of the fourth with a single by Dayson Croes who was sent home plate by a triple to center field hit off the bat of Lance Logsdon, 6-1. Nielsen hit a ground ball to second base to get Logsdon to score another run.
Croes opened up the bottom of the sixth with a nuke over the right field wall, 8-1. The Hawks continued their attack as Logsdon walked and Nielsen hit a double to put players at second and third. Wosman came up with a two RBI double to the left field line to extend their lead 10-1. D'Alessio grounded out to second moving Wosman to third who scored by a sacrifice fly from Roscetti, 11-1.
Amidst the scoring offered by the offense, Riley Martin threw all seven innings and recorded another 16-strikeout game on less than 120 pitches. The Salem, Illinois native struck out the side in the 2nd, 6th, and 7th innings on his way to grasping the all-time wins record with 28 in his incredibly consistent career. Martin's current career win-loss record is 28-9 with two more regular season starts ahead against Drury and #6 UIS in the final regular season weekend on May 7-9th.
