Hawks Win Ninth Straight, Sweep Bearcats On Sunday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team won both of its doubleheader games with Southwest Baptist on Sunday (April 11) afternoon. The Hawks topped SBU 5-4 in game one and exploded to a 23-5 victory in the second game.

Game 1
SBU scored in the first and second and led 2-0 after two innings. Nolan Wosman cut the deficit in half during the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field as QU trailed 2-1. Hawks starter Spencer Walker settled down and ended up going five innings while allowing just two runs.

In the sixth, Gino D'Alessio scored on an error, and Brock Boynton then reached on an error which scored Cole Evans as QU took a 3-2 lead. The Bearcats used an RBI double in the sixth to tie the game 3-3, but Michael Nielsen answered the next half inning with a solo home run to right field which gave the Hawks a 4-3 advantage in the seventh. The Hawks surrendered a home run in the seventh, and the Bearcats forced extra innings as the game was tied 4-4 after seven. QU finally broke through in the tenth when Brock Boynton flied out to right on a sacrifice fly which scored D'Alessio. Sam Stephens came in and got the save, and Brandon Repking provided two and two-thirds of scoreless innings out of the bullpen and picked up the victory in the process. Repking came into the game in the seventh, got the final two outs, and then tossed two full scoreless frames before turning the ball over to Stephens.

Game 2
QU jumped out with four hits in the teams first five at-bats to begin game two. The hot start led to a 3-0 lead after the first behind RBI knocks from Nielsen, Wosman, and Justin Eads. SBU responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but QU still maintained a 3-2 lead. Dayson Croes drove in Brock Boynton in the top of the second inning. Wosman followed with a two-RBI double, and then D'Alessio followed with a two-RBI single through the right side. Quincy broke it open with an 8-2 lead. Boynton had an RBI single later in the inning, and Lance Logsdon knocked a two-RBI single and QU led 12-2 after a nine-run, seven-hit second inning.

The Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the second, and the Hawks continued to add on runs and break the game wide open. D'Alessio tripled to drive in Wosman to start off the huge inning in the top of the third. Wild pitches allowed D'Alessio, Eads, and Kalusniak to score in the frame. Nielsen followed with a sacrifice fly, and then Wosman smashed a three-run home run to left, and QU led 20-2 after scoring eight more runs on three hits in the third inning. Luke Napelton hit an RBI double, and Croes flew out to center to drive in Boynton on the sacrifice to build QU's lead to 22-4 after the fourth inning. Andrew Buescher hit his first collegiate home run with two outs in the sixth inning which gave QU a 23-5 lead.

Hawks starter Kobe Essien went four innings while allowing four runs and six hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Essien allowed two runs in the first, and one each in the third and fourth, but had a commanding lead. Tyler Carpenter followed Essien with one inning out of the pen, and the lefty allowed one run on one hit and registered two strikeouts. Willie Sanchez struck out the side in the sixth inning, and Lance Logsdon pitched the seventh to finish the ballgame while he also struck out the side in order.
