Martin Ties All-Time Wins Record, Hawks Open Series With 8-2 Win

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team welcomed William Jewell College on Friday afternoon (April 16) to QU stadium. Riley Martin struck out 16 to provide an 8-2 win for the Hawks against the Cardinals. With this win, Martin tied the program record with his 27th career victory.

William Jewell attacked early recording three consecutive hits while scoring one run to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Hawks did not take long to recover the lead when Lance Logsdon hit a rocket out of the park for the tying run to make the score 1-1. Quincy continued to put things together as they negotiated a walk and an error followed by an RBI single by Gino D'Alessio to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Hawks put men on base in the next four innings but weren't successful in bringing in a run. Quincy did it again in the bottom of the sixth when Brock Boynton hit a double to the right field wall to put baserunners in second and third. Jacob Kalusniak followed up with a single to the middle which brought home both runs and extended QU's lead to 4-1. Right after, Dayson Croes kept the fire going as he hit a line drive to the right field line for a double placing Kalusniak at third and himself at second. Logsdon missed with a hard ground ball to first base for the second out of the inning, but this was not enough to stop the offensive wave for the Hawks as Michael Nielsen hit a no-doubt home run to right-center field to give QU a 7-1 lead.

The Cardinals scored their second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the seventh to make it 7-2. Joe Roscetti opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to the middle and was sent to third when WJC's pitcher threw wild to first base in his attempt to catch Roscetti off guard. With two outs and two strikes, Boynton hit a RBI single between third and shortstop to bring the last run for the Hawks to make it 8-2 QU.

Riley Martin threw eight incredible innings allowing a total of two runs and matched his career-high in strikeouts for the third time this year with 16. Riley Martin also tied the all-time wins record with 27.
