QUINCY, IL – The Quincy baseball team won 12-2 on Thursday (April 1) over Truman State behind a complete game (7 inning) 16 strikeout performance from
Riley Martin.
Martin had eight strikeouts through the first three frames, and QU's leading hitter
Dayson Croes had an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to give QU a 1-0 lead.
Martin continued to excel, and the Hawks gave him more run support in the bottom of the fifth.
Dayson Croes had an RBI single to drive in
Brock Boynton and QU led 2-0.
Nolan Wosman had a two-RBI single to center field to drive in two more runners and extended the lead to 4-0.
Gino D'Alessio continued the big inning with another RBI single to center which drove in
Michael Nielsen. QU led, 5-0, after the fifth and knocked TSU's starter out of the game.
Brock Boynton left the yard with a solo homerun to right field in the sixth, and QU went up 6-0 headed into the seventh.
Riley Martin went out for the seventh inning despite a high pitch count, and two runs scored on a throwing error and QU's lead was cut to 6-2.
The Hawks responded with a crooked six-run frame in the following half inning which ultimately gave QU the win via mercy rule. A homerun from
Nolan Wosman and
Joe Roscetti along with RBI knocks from
Lance Logsdon,
Dayson Croes, and Nielsen ended the game.
Martin has gone seven or more innings in four of his first five starts. Martin is currently 4-1 with 55 strikeouts through 31 innings pitched and tied his career-high with 16 strikeouts today. The lefty also fanned sixteen batters two weeks ago at USI where he broke the career strikeout record.
