Kansas City, MO. – The Quincy University women's volleyball split a pair of ranked matchups against Lewis and Rockhurst on Saturday afternoon (March 6).
Game 1 vs #1 Lewis
Quincy jumped out to an 11-9 advantage behind back-to-back kills from
Alyssa Grimm. The Flyers rallied back by scoring nine of the next eleven points. A cross-court kill by Norris and a double block by
Makayla Knoblauch and
Sarah Brown brought the Hawks within one at 20-19.
Sydney Clark heated up with consecutive attacks, as the QU deficit was only 23-22. Lewis went on to score the next two points as QU dropped set one, 25-22.
Through the first nine points of set two Quincy's offensive attack was guided by Emily Rehagen, who had three kills. QU led early, 5-4.
A soft tip over by Rothermich and a Flyers attacking error at the net gave the Hawks a 14-12 advantage. Lewis rallied to score the next three points, but a service error tied the contest at 15-15.
Quincy was forced to call their first timeout of the set after a trio of kills put Lewis ahead 20-18. Out of the break, Mattie Norris got a kill from the left side, but it was the sole point for QU as Lewis scored five of the final six points, taking set two, 25-19.
At the start of set three, four different Hawk attackers got in the kill column as QU jumped ahead by three, 7-4. From that point on Lewis shifted gears to an offensive mindset with eight kills to take control at 18-11.
A few points later, Quincy roared back by scoring seven straight points, and this rally was enough to force a Lewis timeout. QU trailed 23-20.
The Flyers had the final say after a Hawk attack error and a kill ended the contest, 25-20.
QU battled but fell short in straight sets to #1 ranked Lewis.
Game 2 vs #22 Rockhurst
In set one, the Hawks dropped the first set, 25-19. On the attacking side, Quincy totaled 15 kills but hit a .167 percentage with seven attacking errors.
Quincy bounced back in set two and found their rhythm as they tallied 18 kills, taking the second frame, 25-21. QU forced four attacking errors and rode the momentum of their outside hitting.
Over the next two sets Quincy and Rockhurst split, with the Hawks coming up victorious in a must-win fourth set. In that frame, Quincy rattled off the final four points of the match to take a 25-20 victory which forced a tie-breaking fifth set.
Quincy hit the ball at their highest clip of the night with a .323 hitting percentage behind 12 team kills. It was a full team effort, as QU clawed from being down two sets to one and took the final tie breaker set, 15-13.
This was the first time QU has defeated Rockhurst in the last fourteen matchups.
