QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team toughed out a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night.
Joel McIlroy scored with two minutes left in the extra period to seal the victory after QU played nearly forty minutes down a man following a red card in the 59th minute.
Most of the action in Friday's GLVC contest came in the final ten minutes of regulation, but a key moment came in the 59th minute. The Tritons looked to have a one-on-one scoring opportunity, but goalkeeper,
Michele Barletta, had to make an instantaneous decision to either challenge the UMSL attacker or risk giving up an easy goal. Barletta chose to meet at the point of the attack and was called for a last line of defense red card.
The Tritons got a free kick at the top of the box after Christos Kalaitzas came in to replace Barletta in goal, but the attemPt missed well high to keep the game scoreless. For the remainder of the contest, the Hawks had to play with ten players to UMSL's eleven.
Things picked up from there with less than nine minutes to play. Missouri-St. Louis scored the first goal of the game when a generous bounce left the Tritons with a wide open net to make it 1-0 just before the 82nd minute.
Quincy did not waver and stayed determined to tie the game. Seven minutes later, they did just that.
With under a minute left in regulation,
Jack Rhead found
Cole Hayes who then found a streaking
Alex Lehmann for the equalizing goal with just 55 seconds left in the second period. This sent the game to overtime.
Eight minutes into the extra session, the Hawks persistence paid off when
Joel McIlroy got the ball just past the goal line after a shot in the box gave Quincy a miraculous 2-1 comeback win.
