QUINCY, IL--- The Quincy University Hawks baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader versus Davenport on Saturday (March 6) afternoon. The Hawks exploded for a 20-9 win in the first game, but fell 16-7 in the night cap.
Game 1
The Hawks got things started early with three consecutive RBI singles from
Zach Parks,
Michael Nielsen, and
Joe Roscetti to take a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Hawks right-handed starting pitcher
Jay Hammel had a clean top of the first, but allowed a run on a single to right field in the top of the second. The Hawks responded with a crooked number that put the game out of reach with nine runs in the second inning. Nielsen smacked a three run home run, and
Gino D'Alessio crushed a grand slam to give the Hawks a 12-1 lead after two innings of play.
The Panthers scratched one more across in the third to make the score 12-2 in the third, but
Lance Logsdon had a homerun in the bottom frame to extend QU's lead to 14-2. Davenport scored four runs in the fourth which knocked starting pitcher Hammel out of the game and came within 14-6.
The Hawks responded again with a massive six run bottom of the fourth behind homeruns from
Dayson Croes,
Nolan Wosman, Logsdon, and Nielsen to make the lead 20-6. The Panthers had two runs in the fifth, and one in the sixth but the game was out of reach.
Freshman
Griffin Kirn tossed two innings in relief while allowing two earned runs and picked up the win.
Jimmy McDonald finished the game with a scoreless frame.
Game 2
Davenport struck first in game two with two runs in the top of the first inning to make the score 2-0. Logsdon responded with a two-strike RBI double in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1. Davenport scored on a sacrifice fly in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Starting pitcher
Spencer Walker tossed scoreless third and fourth inning, and Hawks scratched back a run in the bottom of the fourth on a
Matt Westphal homerun.
Walker tossed a scoreless fifth but was knocked out after getting one out in the sixth.
Dalton Overstreet came into relief, but the Panthers hung a five spot in the sixth to make their lead 8-2. The Panthers then exploded for eight runs behind two homeruns in the eighth inning to extend its lead to 16-2. Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but were not able to complete the comeback.
