Hawks Secure Series Win With 6-5 Victory

EVANSVILLE, IN. – The Quincy University baseball team played its series finale at Southern Indiana on Sunday (March 21) afternoon and earned a 6-5 win.

Quincy plated three runs in the first inning as Jacob Kalusniak led the game off with a single to right, followed by a walk to Dayson Croes. Nolan Wosman then drew a walk, and Gino D'Alessio reached on a fielding error which scored a run. Joe Roscetti then had a two-out, two RBI single to left field to push QU's lead to 3-0 in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Kobe Essien surrendered a hit to start the bottom of the first but retired three in a row keep USI off the board after one.

USI added a run in the third inning on a two-out RBI double and the score was 3-1 after three innings. Quincy tacked on to their lead when three walks were followed by a Michael Nielsen RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1.

The Screaming Eagles came back with three hits in the fourth and scratched one across to make it a 4-2 game. Quincy once again had an answer when Kalusniak hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the fifth to extended the lead to three runs.

In the next inning, the Hawks gave the ball to southpaw Tyler Carpenter out of the bullpen, and he tossed two scoreless frames. The torch was then passed to right-hander Brandon Repking who matched Carpenter with two clean innings of his own.

QU added a vital run in the top of the ninth after Cole Evans singled and Kalusniak drove him in. The Hawks led 6-2 headed to the ninth, but the Screaming Eagles strung together four consecutive hits and made the score 6-5. Relief pitcher Jack Widhalm came in to record the final out and earned the save. This was the fifth win this year by two or fewer runs for the Hawks.
