Hawks Split Saturday Games at Southern Indiana

EVANSVILLE, IN. – The Quincy University baseball team split its Saturday twinbill at Southern Indiana on Saturday (March 21). The Hawks fell 6-4 in the first game, but responded with a 4-2 win in game two. 

Game 1
In the top of the second, Cole Evans reached base on a fielders choice which allowed Logsdon to score and QU led 1-0. Starting pitcher Jay Hammel tossed two scoreless innings, but USI scored four in the third after a hit by pitch, three walks, and a three RBI double and USI led 4-1 after three. 

Joe Roscetti had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to drive in Logsdon, and Evans singled to score Michael Nielsen as QU trailed 4-3 in the top of the sixth. USI tallied another run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to extend its lead to 5-3. Jimmy McDonald came out of the bullpen and threw two innings while allowing one run in the seventh inning. 

Quincy caused danger in the top of the eighth as Justin Eads led off the frame with a walk. Brock Boynton followed with a two-out single, Gino D'Alessio was hit by a pitch, and Dayson Croes walked to score Eads to make it 6-4. Quincy ended the inning with three runners left on base as Kalusniak had a fly out to right field. Quincy left 11 runners on base during the first game and was unable to score in the ninth. 

Game 2
Lance Logsdon toed the rubber and tossed three scoreless frames for the Hawks to start the game. The Hawks got on the board first in the sixth inning when Roscetti scored on a throwing error after a failed pick off attempt. Croes had a sacrifice fly, and then Nielsen hit a triple to score Logsdon.

Spencer Walker followed Logsdon with three scoreless innings of relief, and QU added another run on a Nielsen RBI single to score Croes in the eighth.

Jack Widhalm tossed a scoreless seventh with two strikeouts. Brett Taucher then came in the eighth and stuck out the side, but two walks and a wild pitcher scored to runs and QU held on to a 4-2 advantage. 

Dalton Overstreet then closed the game out with three strikeouts in the ninth inning, earning his fifth save of the season. 

Stats
  • Brock Boynton went 5-8 in the doubleheader today. 
  • Dayson Croes is hitting .422 with a .800 Slug% in 11 starts, but his 10 game hitting streak ended with a 0-2 mark in game number two today. 
  • Michael Nielsen had 18 RBII in 10 starts. with a team high four homeruns. Nielsen went 4-9 today with 2 RBI and a triple.
  • Hawks pitchers have 110 strikeouts in 96.0 innings pitched.
