Martin Becomes QU's Strikeout King, Hawks Top USI 3-2

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team traveled to Evansville, Indiana for its first road game of the year and won 3-2 in the series opener on Friday night (March 19) at Southern Indiana. Starting pitcher Riley Martin had a night to remember as he went eight strong and fanned a career-high 16 batters in the win. He also surpassed Josh Kinney as QU's career strikeout king with his eighth strikeout of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

USI scored the first run of the game on a RBI groundout in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. QU took back the advantage in the fourth behind a Dayson Croes solo shot, and a Michael Nielsen RBI groundout to gain a 2-1 advantage.

Quincy added one more run in the sixth on a Jacob Kalusniak fly out to center field which drove in Gino D'Alessio.

Starting pitcher Riley Martin tossed eight innings and recorded 16 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run. Martin is now 3-0 on the year with a 2.05 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. Martin also became QU's all-time strikeout leader in the fifth inning after recording his eighth strikeout.
