QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team began GLVC play on Friday afternoon (March 12) with a 6-4 win over the Lewis Flyers. Riley Martin went seven innings and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in the series opener.
The Flyers scored in the top of the first with a Anthony Cavalieri homerun to make the score 1-0. The Hawks responded with back-to-back hits from Gino D'Alessio and Dayson Croes then Michael Nielsen drove them both in on a two-strike single to the left side in the bottom frame. Zach Park doubled to drive in Lance Logsdon, and Nielsen came around to score on a wild pitch to give QU a 4-1 lead after the first.
Lewis' Michael O'Brien doubled down the left field line to score a run for Lewis, but Martin got a groundout to end the bases-loaded jam and QU held the lead, 4-2.
The Hawks got hits from the hot-swinging Jacob Kalusniak and Croes in the bottom of the second, but no runs were scored and QU maintained a 4-2 lead after two.
Martin had a clean third with two strikeouts, and Logsdon led off the bottom of the frame with a double.
Zach Parks grounded a 3-0 pitch to the third baseman, but an error allowed Logsdon to score and the Hawks held a 5-2 lead after three.
Lewis loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fourth, but
Joe Roscetti made a diving play in right field to end the Flyers' threat. The Hawks were quiet in the fourth, and Martin stranded a runner in the top of the fifth with his eighth strikeout.
Brock Boynton then drove in Nielsen on an infield single, but he was caught stealing to end the fifth and the Hawks led 6-2. The Flyers scored another run on a one-out double to left to make the score 6-3. Martin tossed a shutdown seventh inning with two strikeouts, and tied his career high with 11 punch outs in the outing.
Quincy was quiet in the bottom of the seventh, and Brett Taucher threw a scoreless eighth with a strikeout out of the bullpen. Dalton Overstreet came in to close the door in the ninth, and the Hawks began GLVC play with a win over Lewis.
