QUINCY, IL – Coming off a game one victory yesterday, the Quincy University baseball team looked to gain a series lead, but the Lewis Flyers had other plans. The visitors took both games of Saturday's doubleheader 3-2 in game one and 13-5 in game two.
Game 1
The Hawks starting pitcher Jay Hammel worked around two hits and a walk in the first, but allowed a two-out RBI double to left center which gave Lewis a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Lewis starter Jake Karaba retired the first four hitters he faced until Michael Nielsen smashed an opposite field home run to tie the game at 1-1.
Hammel walked two in the third, but got a fly out, Jacob Kalusniak caught a runner stealing, and struck out a runner to end the threat. Hawks were set down in order in the top of the fourth, and Hammel responded with a one-two-three inning of his own as the score was deadlocked at 1-1 after four innings.
Quincy had two base runners aboard with walks in the top of the fifth, but the runners were left stranded. Hammel surrendered a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth, but got out of it. Hammel allowed two singles in the sixth, and then Nolan Roseman came out of the bullpen. Both inherited runners scored, and Lewis led 3-2 after the sixth inning.
The Hawks went down in order in the seventh and eighth, and had one final chance trialing by a run in the ninth but fell short.
Game 2
Lewis once again were the aggressors in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The Flyers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first four innings behind nine hits. Quincy finally got on the board in the button of the fifth and scored three runs to cut their deficit in half. Lance Logsdon doubled to bring in one, then Michael Nielsen and Joe Roscetti singled and brought in a run each. QU trailed 6-3.
The Flyers answered back with a two-run home run to boost their lead to 8-3 then the Hawk bats clapped back with two runs of their own to make it 8-5. Dayson Croes doubled to bring in Matt Westphal and Logsdon brought home Gino D'Alessio.
Just when the Hawks cut it close, the Flyers tacked on two more. A throwing error on an infield chopper with runners on first and third led to two runs coming across as the Lewis lead grew to 10-5. The visitors tacked on three more in the top of the ninth to bust the game open once and for all, 13-5.
The Hawks fell by that score.
