Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – The Quincy University women's basketball team traveled to Missouri S&T on Saturday evening (Jan. 9). The Hawks came up short losing their first game of the 2021 year by a final, 76-61.
In the first quarter, the Hawks took an early 5-2 lead after a three-pointer from Aleksandra Petrovic. With a quick response, the Miners went on a 9-0 run leading into media time-out, to take an 11-5 lead.
The Largest lead of the quarter came for the Miners at the 3:12 mark, as they held a 17-7 advantage. Laney Lantz scored six of the ten points for the Hawks in the first quarter. A pair of free throws from the sophomore guard helped close the gap as QU trailed 17-10 after one period of play.
In the second quarter the Hawks picked up things offensively, shooting 64.3 percent on 9-14 field goals. QU outscored the Miners 21 to 16 to narrow the gap.
The Hawks entered the half trailing by two, 33-31 after a steal from Petrovic led to a buzzard beating jumper from the free throw line by Dami Adeyinka.
Midway through the third quarter a Miners 6-0 run extended their lead to 39-31. With 3:13 minutes to go, a pair of free throws from Lantz cut the lead to four, 45-41.
Finishing the quarter scoring the final nine points, the Miners were able to take a 54-43 lead entering the final ten minutes of play.
The run to end the third quarter would be all the Miners needed to keep the Hawks at bay. Quincy fell on the road to Missouri S&T with a final of 76-61.
