QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team played their second game in three days on Tuesday night (Jan. 5) when they took on Southern Indiana. QU fell to the Screaming Eagles by a final score of 83-77.
Quincy got out in front early following a three from
Viktor Kovacevic and baskets by
Silas Crisler and
Charles Callier. The Hawks led 8-5 in the first two and a half minutes.
Tanner Stuckman got on the board with a three-pointer and Callier also hit from downtown to give the Hawks a 14-9 lead with 15:17 left in the first half.
A minute later, Quincy embarked on an 8-2 run to push their lead to eight points as the score moved to 22-14, QU. Stuckman scored five points to fuel this swing.
Southern Indiana came right back by scoring the next six points to cut Quincy's lead to 22-20 with under ten minutes before the half.
With 6:31 remaining, Quincy pushed back by eight points once again after
Jack Youmans knocked down a three. QU led 30-22.
This was the largest lead held by the Hawks the rest of the way, but QU did hold a 38-32 lead going into the break.
In the first half, the Hawks shot over 40% from three-point range after taking 17 attempts.
Southern Indiana roared back in the second half. In the first five minutes after halftime, USI went on a 15-7 run to regain the lead, 47-45.
Viktor Kovacevic answered back with a three to put QU right back in front.
The deciding factor in the game was a 16-2 run by the Screaming Eagles over a five-minute span. USI held the Hawks without a basket for over four minutes to pull ahead 63-50.
Quincy showed their fight by cutting the deficit to just one point when the score moved to 67-66 with 5:20 left in the game.
While the Hawks got close, they were never able to regain the lead down the stretch. Quincy committed four turnovers in the final four and half minutes as they fell by a final score of 83-77.
