QUINCY, Ill. – Two weeks removed from their last game, the Quincy University men's basketball team was back in action against the Indianapolis Greyhounds on Sunday evening (Jan. 3). The Hawks got double digit scoring efforts from
Tanner Stuckman,
Viktor Kovacevic, and
Jamaurie Coakley to solidify an 83-73 win to open 2021.
Sunday's matchup was highly competitive from the opening jump. After the first five minutes of play, the Hawks and Greyhounds were tied 8-8 with buckets from
Silas Crisler, Kovacevic, and
Jamaurie Coakley.
Tanner Stuckman and
Adam Moore later knocked down a three-pointer each and Coakley got to the rim to give QU a 16-10 lead with 12:24 left in the first half.
With under ten minutes to play in the opening half, the Hawks went ahead 22-14 following another three by Stuckman and another deep basket from
Charles Callier.
The Greyhounds fought back and made the score 24-23 with 6:53 before halftime. Quincy maintained the lead until just 1:43 left in the first half. Indianapolis tied it, 34-34, with a three-pointer, and they took the lead twenty seconds later, 36-34.
Callier scored in the paint with under a minute left before halftime to make the score 37-36 favoring Indy going into the locker room.
Out of the break, Indianapolis came out on a 7-0 run to pull ahead of the Hawks, 44-36. Quincy kept their composure and battled back by going on a 19-4 run over the next six minutes. With 12:42 left, QU pulled ahead 55-48.
During the run,
Viktor Kovacevic scored nine points, Stuckman added five, and Coakley banged in a three.
This burst from the home Hawks was the difference in the game, and QU never surrendered the lead the rest of the way.
The Greyhounds came within two points with 5:38 to play when the score moved to 66-64 QU, but the Hawks sealed the deal by outscoring Indianapolis 17-9 in the final four minutes.
Down the stretch, Quincy made 13-of-15 from the free throw line to stay in command.
The Hawks won by a final score of 83-73.
Jamaurie Coakley finished the game with his first double-double as a Hawk after he scored 16 points and grabbed ten rebounds.
