Box Score QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team had a day the last time they faced the Saints of Maryville, but Thursday night's (Jan. 14) GLVC contest had a different outcome. The Hawks got a career-high 18 points from
Jack Youmans off the bench but fell by a final score of 86-75.
Quincy shot slightly better from the floor than the visitors in Thursday's contest (47.2% compared to Maryville's 45.8%), but ten missed free throws and three technical fouls made it hard to gain momentum in the contest.
The Hawks got going with a layup and a three-pointer from
Tanner Stuckman as well as a made three by
Charles Callier to take an early 8-6 lead.
Maryville's Owen Long was feeling it in the first half as he did not miss his first four three-point attempts. The Saints pulled ahead 25-18 with 8:38 left in the first half behind the hot shooting from Long.
Quincy later chipped away at Maryville's lead when a jumper by Callier and
Jamaurie Coakley on back-to-back possessions made the deficit 32-27 with five minutes before halftime.
Tanner Stuckman made it a one-point game after hitting a three-pointer with 1:44 left before the half. The Saints clung to a 36-35 lead.
Charles Callier connected from midrange with under twenty seconds left before the break, and the Hawks went to the locker room trailing 42-39.
Early in the second half,
Jamaurie Coakley tied the game 46-46 with a driving layup.
With 15:21 left in the game, QU trailed 51-48 before the Saints went on a run. Maryville score nine unanswered points to move in front, 60-48, with 12:52 on the clock.
With under ten minutes to go, the Hawks tried to climb back in it when a three by
Silas Crisler on a fastbreak made the score 62-55. After a bucket from MU,
Tanner Stuckman stepped into a shot from downtown and connected to make the score 64-58.
The wheels came of with around six minutes to go when Maryville jumped ahead 72-59. The deficit was compounded by two technical fouls in less than a minute by QU. Following the techs, Quincy trailed by 17 points and did not muster a comeback.
Maryville came out with the win, 86-75.
The Hawks shot 58% from the charity stripe after making just 14-of-24 attempts.
Jack Youmans provided a spark off the bench by scoring a career-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting with all six made attempts coming from deep.
