QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team kicked off GLVC play on Saturday (March 7) when they faced Bellarmine University. The Hawks dropped both games with a 9-5 defeat in game one followed by a 12-2 loss in the nightcap.
Game 1
Quincy found themselves in a hole after just the first inning. The Knights plated four runs behind a wild pitch, an error, and a double.Â
After a run came home on a bases loaded wild pitch, the Hawks looked to minimize the damage with two outs. A ground ball on the infield looked to get the Hawks out of the jam, but the out was not recorded. The error on the play brought in two runs to give Bellarmine a 3-0 lead.Â
The Knights added another run on a double to make it 4-0 after the first inning.Â
In the top of the second, BU scored with two solo home runs. This put the Hawks in a 6-0 disadvantage after two.Â
The Knights lead grew as large as nine runs in the fifth inning. Quincy was able to get on the board in the sixth.Â
Lance Logsdon brought in two with an RBI single to make it 9-2.Â
In the seventh,
Joe Roscetti hit a solo home run to right center to bring the score to 9-3 BU.Â
The Hawks scrapped across two more runs in the ninth inning, but the comeback effort was cut short as the Knights got the win in game one.Â
Game 2
Things did not get much better for the home squad in the second game of the day. Bellarmine used the same formula as before.Â
The Knights jumped right out by scoring two runs in the first inning. A home run and an RBI double put the Hawks behind 2-0 after one.Â
Bellarmine kept their foot on the gas by scoring two more in the top of the second. Another double brought in two more runs and made the score 4-0.Â
Matt Westphal got QU on the board with a solo shot to left center in the top of the third to make it a 4-1 game.Â
Unfortunately, it was all Bellarmine the rest of the way. The Knights scored in each of the next four innings which included putting up three scores in the fourth and sixth innings.Â
The Hawks lost in seven innings by a final score of 12-2.Â
Next Game
Quincy looks to avoid a sweep in the series finale tomorrow afternoon (March 8) with a single game that is set to start at noon.Â
