QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University baseball team battled the Bellarmine Knights down to the wire on Sunday (March 8). The Hawks were down by as many as four runs before cutting it to a one-run game in the ninth. Bellarmine halted the comeback with a 6-5 win in the series finale.
How It Happened
For the first time in the series, Quincy struck first. The Hawks plated a run in the bottom of the first inning when
Lance Logsdon singled to right field and brought in
Dayson Croes.
Bellarmine had a response in the very next half inning.
The Knights hit a solo home run in the top of the second to tie the score at one run apiece.
A pivotal moment in the game happened in the top of the third. With a runner on first base and two outs already recorded, Bellarmine hit a towering shot down the left field line over the foul poul that looked to hook foul. The home plate umpire signaled that it was fair and the Knights took a 3-1 lead.
More fuel was added to the fire when two errors on the infield led to another run coming home and extending the Knights lead to 4-1.
Quincy was not held in check for long as Logsdon came through in the bottom of the fifth. The Canton, Missouri product hit another RBI single to cut the deficit in half, 4-2.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning.
In the top of the eighth, Bellarmine scored two crucial runs. An RBI single and a sacrifice fly gave the visitor's a 6-2 lead with only two at-bats remaining for the Hawks.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth,
Josh Rabe went to his bench in a pinch-hit situation. The skipper turned to
Joe Roscetti, and the redshirt sophomore delivered a jolt of momentum.
Roscetti laced a two-run home run to right center to bring the score to 6-4.
In the top of the ninth,
Jack Widhalm worked a scoreless frame to bring back the bats with a two-run deficit.
The Hawks started things off with back-to-back singles.
Kade Burns came in to pinch-hit and laid down a bunt to move the runners into scoring position.
Lance Logsdon fouled out to deep left and brought in a run to make the score 6-5 with two outs.
Quincy was retired in the next at-bat to end the comeback attempt. The Hawks fell 6-5.
Both
Lance Logsdon and
Dayson Croes had three hits each in the contest. Croes scored twice and Logsdon drove in three.
